Able Seaman Peter Harris had been on watch for the last three hours. He was sure he was becoming snowblind. Gazing out at the expanse of whiteness, he wasn’t really sure what he was looking for. “Signs of the enemy” was the order but how could he tell, trapped in this seemingly endless ice flow? No smoke rose above the frozen walls around him and any movement of the jostling blocks made it difficult to tell what was real and what was an illusion created by refracted light. Even the giveaway rumble of engines was muffled by the huge blocks of ice colliding. Harris rubbed his eyes and still saw the blank blue-white of his surroundings. As he looked out again, without warning a grey dagger-like shape broke the colour void. Within seconds he had sounded the alarm and the Albion Cruiser was alive with sailors beating to quarters. Silently, Harris hoped that the enemy had been as clueless about their proximity as he was. He would soon find out how prepared they were.

Commonwealth propaganda states that the Barents Sea is perfectly safe, thanks to its proximity to the sheltered docks of the White Sea from which defensive patrols regularly launch. In truth, however, it is far from tranquil. Raiders from the Scandinavian portion of the Imperium, not to mention the Scions of Jutland, frequently ambush the numerous fishing vessels and exploratory platforms. Loki Shadow Raiders make excellent use of their Ivaldi Shroud Generators to make surprise attacks and then fade away once they have crippled their target. Heimdall Recon Raiders use advanced detection systems to locate enemy patrols with the goal of avoiding contact until their battlefleet has the upper hand while Fenrir Hunter Submarines and Valkyrie Hunt Rotors allow multi-level attacks to be made. Fishermen and other civilian vessels are now being issued military escorts to prevent the damage that the Scandinavian battlefleets have been causing. Time will tell if that will be enough.

The Egyptians have designed their vessels to float upon cushions of air, equally adept at gliding across the endless deserts as well as the open ocean. A prime example is the Abydos Hover Stronghold, numerous gun batteries can be brought to bear while repair crews wait, ready at a moments notice to perform remarkable feats of field engineering. When more direct offence is needed, the Pharos Hover Dreadnought brings a staggering array of weaponry to bear against its foes, including a deadly heavy particle cannon. The Pharos taxes its powerplant to an extreme, its weapon systems drawing on power that might otherwise be used for assisting its repulsion systems with the additional weight of its munitions. Any port was understandably scared when they saw the vessels of the enemy on the horizon, defences were manned and military forces were on alert. If the ships sighted were bearing the markings of the Scions of Jutland, it was an altogether more desperate affair. No quarter would be given, no surrender accepted and no mercy shown. While operating under a letter of marque from the Kriegsministerium, the Scions of Jutland have their own hierarchy, following the augueries of Volva Gullveig, the Witch of Jutland. A patron of one of the Great Powers might try to employ the services of the Scions as privateeers, but Gullveig has her own eldritch motives guiding her decisions and, ultimately, the contracts undertaken by the group. Few know why she does what she does but none can question her effectiveness.

Often a battlefleet will be led by a Valhalla Fast Dreadnought, its paired Sturmbringers and fore mounted heavy volt gun batteries providing a devastating punch before eager marines perform a decisive boarding action. Rarer but no less impressive are the Asgard carriers, surrounded by swarms of Valkyrie Hunt Rotors, unleashing their fury from above like their mythic namesakes. Only moments ago the Alliance patrol was chugging peacefully along. Now there was only chaos and violence. The patrol was making routine rounds 205 Nautical miles from the Bay of Oiapoque that marked the border with SUSA and the Union of Federated States. Merely two days ag this stretch of sea was devoid of any points of interest. Now there was a Farpoint Sentry Platform. The Union had managed to put this into pace with remarkable speed. While technically far enough out to see to not be a breach of any treaties, the Alliance Commodore, Saulo Rezende saw this as an insult. Without any visible backup, he decided to make a name for himself by taking the platform. Had his crew spotted the shapes getting bigger on the horizon, COMO Rezende may have decided against it. Cheyanne Hunter Submarines rose to the surface and unleashed torpedoes against the now outnumbered patrol. Akron Sentry Rotors flew from the skies, hidden in the glare of the midday sun. More terrifying than all of them, a pair of John Henry Vitruvian Colossi had raced in from distance and crushed frigates and cruisers alike with great hammers that annihilated whole sections of a vessel at a time sending men to their watery grave before they could realise what was happening. The last thing that Commodore Saulo Rezende thought of was the skill of the trap that ended him. That, and the crews he had led to their doom. James Spigot reeled across the deck, feeling that what he saw wouldn’t be out of place in a penny dreadful. Strange saucer shapes soared through the sky, unleashing beams of light that carved through the Crown frigates like a hot knife through butter. James was thankful that his large battleship was protected by the combined power of their Guardian generators, the vessels on the outskirts of the fighting had no such security. The smaller of the saucers seemed to have an almost unnatural agility, able to twist and turn, finding new targets before the Crown naval vessels could react. Some launched fighters that were even now buzzing around far above his head. Ordinary Seaman Spigot saw one of the larger disc shaped flyers approach, only now appreciating its size comparative to his own craft. Without warning a bright ray of energy, tinged with green, burned into the Guardian shield above him. The fighters exploded like fireworks rippling through the Guardian field and overloading it. The noise of combat in the Ordinary Seaman’s ears was now deafening, no longer blunted by the Guardian field. The last thing James Spigot saw were dozens of metallic spheres, falling from a hatch in the bottom of the larger saucer. The last thing he did was pray.

"While our discoveries of Sturginium and its uses has ushered in a time of scientific marvels, unrecognisable to those of previous generations, there has also been a recent resurgence of older designs but with vastly more powerful results. The Rostratum Naval Ballista is a perfect example of this. The simple idea of a bolt being launched to impact and pierce a target has been with us since ancient times. The Italian Engineers of the Latin Alliance have advanced this in a way that could only be achieved with hitherto unknown comprehension of engineering. They have designed bolts using current alloys that are a fraction of the weight of a comparable steel structure while losing none of its material hardness. In place of twisted rope they use electro-magnetic rails that fire the bolt at incredible speed. Reports of a projectile impacting on the hull of an enemy vessel and then being hauled in to spin the target to a less desirable facing are troubling and interesting in equal measure. I propose we explore ideas like this further. Imagine the untapped potential we already have in our history. Imagine a trebuchet with a thousand times its previously registered force, Da Vinci’s designs made real or Greek Fire made on an industrial scale."

Kai Chen had joined the navy to escape his rural life, see the world and do his part for the Celestian Empire. He’d heard about the Zhanmadao in training camps but even after learning about their use as a central command unit for a battlefleet and seeing diagrams, he was still awestruck when he finally saw a ‘castle in the clouds’ for the first time. The size of the Fortress was almost incomprehensible to him, larger than any of the naval vessels he had seen in his life by far. The sun played across it and cast shadows in the same way the buildings of his barracks and offices did. Kai wondered at the power that would keep a thing like this in the air. The crew alone needed to man this wonder of engineering must be in triple figures. That it carried a squadron of fighters as well as their support staff hadn’t yet crossed his mind and already he found it dizzying. At that moment Kai Chen knew he had made the right decision to join the navy and would make it the rest of his life’s work to be posted aboard a Zhanmadao. This was an example of the Empire’s glory and no-one could stand against it.

Commonwealth engineering is often a case of forcing something to work, whether it wants to or not. This is surely the case with the Irkutsk Skydrill. While checks and balances of the laws of physics must be adhered to, it doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to work around them. Overpowered repulsor generators keep the vessel in the sky but have little spare energy to move it, this is what the aft pulsejets are for. The one example of engineering elegance to make it through is the massive amount of heat produced by the repulsors is then syphoned into the propulsion system. Even the weaponry is a case of maximum power for a minimum problem. The Semyenov Assault Bore is a perfect transmission of momentum into force. The destruction caused is often enough to bring down the largest sky fortress. While the design of the Irkutsk appears to ba a fever dream of the Dystopian Age, no one can dispute its effectiveness as it powers through the skies. While these Skycruisers soar above the waves, the Commonwealth Hovercraft skim across their surface. Again the simplicity of these machines is testament to their efficiency. They are as effective over water as they are on land and are incredibly effective at landing troops on land-bound targets.

It was a small unnamed island, part of an unremarkable chain. Uninhabited. If there were anyone there they would have been treated to a glorious sight. A formation of Malinois Strike Fighters soared above the battlefleet, pilots seeing far into the distance thanks to their elevated position. The triangular craft were only visible as specks by the crewmen below and would have gone unnoticed to the wildlife of the island. Even the men of the fleet who did see made no mention of it as they were far too busy preparing for the oncoming violence. Next came a squadron of Gladius Cruisers, flanked by Cestus Zebeks, livery freshly painted as a point of pride. They were swiftly followed by Pugio Destroyers, ready to change formation at a moment's notice and unleash a surprising amount of firepower. After that came the flagship, a Minerva Assault Carrier, from which had launched the fighters circling overhead. She was the ‘Giornata Gloriosa’, the fluid lines of her decorated hull reflecting the sunlight. The flightdeck had more Malinois prepared to launch once the enemy was spotted while cranes and docking mechanisms were stowed away, ready to release the moment a cruiser pulled alongside for emergency repairs. Trailing behind here were Scorpio Artillery Cruisers, their Naval Ballista sitting silent, waiting for action. The parrots on the island paid no attention to the impressive sight, let alone wonder what fools had garnered the military attention of the Alliance. This box contains:

Isolated in the vast ocean, the platform stood in defiance of nature. A symbol of humanity’s conquest of the globe in the Dystopian Age. It was quiet now. A fire that had previously run out of control had been put out by a recent storm. All hands abandoned the place during the conflict that had caused the blaze, the only inhabitants now were some errant seabirds pausing their migration. Before that battle it had the official title of ‘The Shining Point at the End of the World’ by the ever verbose Celestian Empire. Before then it was ‘War Platform Sandringham’ to the Crown, although the assigned crew called it ‘the arse end of nowhere’. Before that, its name and very existence had been redacted as an asset of the Commonwealth. What it would be called next was yet to be decided, no doubt by combat that cost the lives of men. Men with families that lived far from here. The seabirds who had a chance to fold their wings there neither knew nor cared. They were simply glad of the rest.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. How can something so massive just hang in the air? Sure, we've got airships but at least they follow the laws of nature. Glorified balloons I can understand. What did you call it; a Thule? That was something else. I thought those huge thrusters were keeping it in the sky at first but I think it only uses them to maneuver. I couldn’t believe how quiet it was. We saw the shadow before we heard it arrive. It got loud pretty quickly though. Fighters screamed out of the section where the two discs joined. Some sort of light came out of the rim of the disks and carved across our bow. Sliced through it like we were paper. I’ll never forget the sound. That screech shook me to my core, made my bones itch. Spent the rest of the battle getting thrown around in a lifeboat so I don’t know how much more intel I can give you. Can I go back to the ward now?”

The largest Ekranoplan in the world, the Alexayev is tasked with rapidly deploying small squadrons of hovercraft or even other Ekranoplans to key locations as part of a rapid reaction force. Named after Evgenievich Alexayev, the brilliant engineer who won the Tzar’s wager by proving his proposed design for the Ekranoplan was possible.

A brutal addition to the White Navy and favoured by northern Captains, the Khatanga combines a ferocious Semyenov pattern assault bore in the prow with the dreaded cryo Generator.

The Dragunov and Stoletov ground effect vehicles were designed by Helsinki Markov himself following his return to the Commonwealth after years studying with the Covenant of the Enlightened. Skimming the surface of the sea, they excel at high-speed rocket attacks and troop transport.

Utilising the repulsion field generator obtained by Helsinki Markov in 1856, the Irkutsk Skydrill is often heard approaching, long before it is seen. The buzz of the overcharged field generators and the roar of the Semyenov assault bore spinning up to full speed makes a terrifying cacophony.

Utilising the Selivanenko pattern Aural Dissonance Array (known more commonly as a Shockwave Generator), the Giyena moves rapidly across uneven landscapes, marshland and the open sea to bring this potent device to bear.

The ‘Morskoi Orel’ roared across the waves at a speed unreasonable for its size. The Alexayev Ekranoplan Heavy Transport is an engineering marvel, a case of mankind’s ingenuity over nature. This was unlike the more esoteric devices of the Covenant of the Enlightened, this was a machine of brute force. Of course, there were lightweight Sturginium alloys involved in its construction but if you put enough rockets on anything, it will go fast. Most of the crew wore ear protectors to help with the deafening noise, even the officers on the bridge needed discrete earplugs to prevent the worst of the thunderous racket. The Alexayev is a vessel that works by the mantra; ‘strike fast, strike hard’. Crashing into battle, unleashing an overwhelming barrage from its multiple Katyusha Salvos and then unloading its cargo of hovercraft, this enormous ekranoplan is often the decisive strike in a Commonwealth naval operation and today would be no exception to that.

Squadrons of Chubu hunter submarines prowl the Sea of Japan and beyond looking for targets of opportunity. These deadly vessels are armed with multiple torpedo launchers to achieve a swift kill.

Sakata Heavy Destroyers combine firepower, speed and group tactics to present a formidable and tenacious foe to the enemies of Japan.

The shadows of Japanese submersibles had been spotted on an intercept course. With no sign of any Miyagi or Okinawa nearby and no long range visuals of a Tianlong in the area, the usual aerial support of such a battlefleet, it was just a case of waiting for them to surface and picking them off with supporting fire from their collective storm vanes. A Koromodako breached the waves, its steel tentacles waving impotently. The bridge crew of the lead Kreigsturm shared a grin as the orders were made to fire upon the helpless submersible. It took a little while for one of the junior officers to notice that other vessels had appeared at a different heading. Strange little machines swarmed around; Rin Exosubs. Flying in formation they ducked to the safety of the depths to avoid fire. Perhaps this would not be such a one-sided engagement after all?

The Lesanth Exemplar-Cruiser is often held in awe by the enemies of the Sultanate and rightly so. It contains feats of engineering that might be considered magic by those who had not borne witness to them before. The bright ray ofJudgement Lances that make even Particle Beamers pale in comparison. Portals that allow other vessels to fire through without exposing themselves to enemy fire. Not to mention the expressionless, steel visage of the Cor Coroli than act as marines. Woe betide anyone who believe they stood a chance in an engagement with this ship of the Order.

Carolus Destroyers are formidable indeed. Crewed entirely by the devout members of the martial religious group known as the Order, they answer only to Sircan Osman on behalf of the Sultan.

"We thought we were safe. There was only one cruiser, reckoned we'd scared the rest of them 'Sultanas' off. Good work, job done, back home for tea and biscuits. I remember saying to Jonesy what an easy patrol it was. Then I saw it over his shoulder, like a giant mirror with a glowing frame a little ways off the port bow. Huge it was, size of a house. Problem was, it weren't a mirror of us, you could see a different ship on the other side. One of theirs. Before we knew it, there was shots coming through. Like a hole in the wall but connecting houses in different streets. I still can't make head nor tail of it. I don't know how I made it. Jonesy didn't. You see one of them portal thingies, move."

While the hull has remained relatively unchanged for more than fifty years, the Albion class Cruisers have received a regular schedule of upgrades integrating newer technology to keep these venerable vessels relevant and capable in this Dystopian Age.

Crews of Caliburn Frigates are renowned for their fearlessness in the face of larger and more deadly adversaries. Though some will be lost in the attempt, they valiantly battle in her Majesty's name.
