Originally conceived by the dwarfs as their Steel Behemoth, the concept of an Iron Beast was later brought to the Shires by the halfling Percival Arbuckle and the design later evolved by Paddy Bobart . While the designs of individual machines vary, they are all essentially an enormous four-legged, steam — powered behemoth controlled from a small cabin on the back and armed with guns, piercing tusks and unstoppable momentum. An implacable foe, they are eminently capable of smashing through an enemy army, spreading death and shear panic.

Stormcallers are the spiritual leaders of the Riftforged Orcs. They are not mere priests or double-speaking shamans, but living embodiments of their patron’s power, whose toil at sacred elemental forges, or unto the anvil of battle, is a homage to the power of Garkan himself.

Stormcallers act as messengers and emissaries, often delivering the orders of the High Marshalls or even one of the Wicked Ones directly from the Abyss to the field of battle. Although none amongst the Riftforged would openly question the Stormcallers’ authority, the legionaries are always uneasy around the enigmatic individuals, whose nature seems disturbingly similar to the Wicked Ones themselves.

Stormslayers are massive creatures created from the same stock as trolls, but exposure to the Nexus of Power drove them to a rage-fuelled frenzy. Each has a pair of great falchions, with which they could control the lightning that might otherwise consume them. In battle, the Stormslayers are driven by pain-fuelled rage, and with each sweep of their falchions the foe are smote with the very force of the storm.

Some units of halflings have made soldiering a full-time profession. These Stalwarts are better equipped than the Trained Bands, with metal armour (a mix of thick leather and plate mail), helmets and strong shields. Heavier battle cavalry, mounted on armoured aralez are armed with lances. They are designated as knights by outsiders simply because their weapons, equipment, and battlefield role is similar to the knights of other armies. However, as the halflings have no noble class, the name ‘knights’ is misleading in the true sense. The halflings themselves know them as Juggers.

It is said that the wail of a banshee can turn a man's heart to ice. Halflings are a practical bunch though, and - provided their offerings are plentiful enough - many can actually benefit from having a Banshee around. These ethereal horrors are often brought in for the largest feasts. If a Halfling eats Too Much (a state that many traditionalists believe is just made up nonsense), they can call on the wail of a Banshee to alleviate heartburn. All it costs is their immortal soul. But who needs that? Clear out the room for more food!

Through years of cowering in dank holes, the Halfling groundskeepers have turned into feral monsters, spending their lives hungering solely for their next meal and attacking anyone who gets in the way. Oh, but their next meal is likely Halfling flesh and bone - that's what makes them different to regular Halflings.

In the idyllic town of Craggy Bottom, the threat of a deceased relative coming back from the dead as a shambling corpse is pretty common. Living right next door to Deathly Pastures Cemetery State, a shambling zombie walking through town is a Tuesday. So the burial rituals have grown more elaborate as time has gone on. A popular method is mummification. Not that this stops them rising from the grave, it's just that without their internal organs and wrapped in bandages it's a lot less messy when they hobble into the tavern.

Halfling Wizards are a rare and odd bunch. Trained in the colleges of magic along with all the other races, even rarer still are those that don't enjoy the bustling college life. Considering college is one big party (which for a Halfling = feast), it's rare. Sometimes those reclusive individuals pursue the art of necromancy. Huddled away in dark rooms they study the ancient practice of raising the dead. Of course, we live in a modern fantasy world where that sort of thing isn't actually as edgy as it used to be - there's a whole campus dedicated to the discipline. More often than not though, a Halfling like that will stay in their room, listening to weird music, before running back to Deathly Pastures to practice raising the dead. Doesn't matter how dark and tortured your soul is, call your mother once in a while, okay? She worries.

Invariably at the head of a shambling army of undead Halflings is a creature of great power, and a Vampire Lord is one such being. Halfling Vampire Lords aren't mindless killers though, and actually foster an endearment among Halfling villages, as they rarely drink their blood. Human cities are their hunting grounds, and a particularly dangerous specimen will leave a trail of blood-drained bodies, puncture wounds in their calves.
