Sunspear Dervishes raise House Martell’s doctrine of high mobility to a fine art. Their training allows them to rapidly engage, strike hard, and just as rapidly disengage to either prep for another run or choose a more opportune target. Enemies so besieged are often so rattled by the spinning, whirling dance of blades that their own response is badly hampered. While Dervishes can hold in a melee for a time, they’re best kept on-the-move or working together with other Martell units to wear down a particularly determined foe.

House Martell’s famous Sunspear Royal Guards are few in number but count among the best-trained units across all of Westeros. Their adaptive style lends itself well to both offensive and defensive initiatives, and while their armor is heavier than most Martell units, their physical conditioning allows them to keep pace. As a hard center to a Martell vanguard, the Royal Guards have no match in Martell forces, and their flexibility lets them seize the initiative on the field as the tide of battle shifts.

In far-off Essos, Queen Daenerys Targaryen rules over a court rife with intrigue. Armored with only their faith, and armed only with deadwood cudgels and other detritus from a storm-wracked shore; the Drowned Men make surprisingly effective support for followers of the Kraken banner. Their presence in battle signifies the Drowned God’s blessing, bolstering men to fight past their wounds and strike all the harder against their foes. While few in number, the drowned Men’s faith is such that they can survive even killing blows. That said, strong as their faith may be, a wise commander should not be putting these fanatics in the vanguard. Working with flankers or in direct support of the line ensures the Drowned God’s blessings are shared equally among his people.

Highgarden, the center of power for House Tyrell, is known as a place of chivalric values. In the conflict to secure the Iron Throne following Robert Baratheon’s death, House Baratheon has called for aid and House Tyrell has answered by sending their Highgarden Pikemen. These highly trained fighters create a mobile wall of death on the battlefield, trained to perfection in the use of their pikes. This pride in knowing what they do is right is further bolstered when the troops gain an advantage in numbers of their enemy. If goaded into a fury by a Loyalist Captain, their zeal grows, making them fight even more reliably and shaking their opponents to the core.

King Renly’s alliance to House Tyrell through marriage to the Lady Margaery has given him access to the famed Riders of Highgarden. Although not as heavily armored as most heavy cavalry, the famed Riders of Highgarden can mount a devastating charge, though like most cavalry, their weakness lies in getting bogged down in prolonged combats. Savvy commanders should take care to make the most of their flanking capabilities and speed to target exposed enemy flanks.

The Free Folk are a conglomerate group, consisting of many different northern tribes. Though they don’t all share the same ideologies or faiths, they do all have a shared goal: making a name and home for themselves in the southern parts of Westeros. Standing out from the average clansman are formidable adversaries, such as Barroq, a beast of a man who travels with his equally beastly Boar. The Great Walrus is well known for his skills in negotiation. And possibly most famous of all, Jon Snow seeks out his true destiny along the winding path that fate has taken him. Abel, the Bard, and his wife Dalla, make sure to sing their praises. These are but some of the individuals that have made a distinct name for themselves among the many faceless peoples of the Free Folk.

With Joffrey Baratheon’s ascension to the Iron Throne, House Lannister controls King’s Landing from behind the throne. With ambition as deep as their coffers, House Lannister seeks to legitimize their claim on the throne. Queen Cersei & Tommen exert their influence in the halls of power while out in the field, her brother Jaime, despite being taken hostage, still works towards the Lannister’s favor. Sir Kevan Lannister works to see his niece’s ambitions met. Meanwhile, the House’s allies such as The Mountain that Rides, Ser Addam Marbrand, Qyburn, and Ser Robert Strong work to maintain House Lannister’s grip on the Iron Throne. It will not be broken easily.

The Brotherhood of the Night’s Watch defends Westeros from the horrors that lay beyond The Wall. Despite being made up of criminals, runaways, lesser sons of nobles, and anyone that Yoren, the Wandering Crow, can recruit, they are no rag-tag group. Commanders like Cotter Pyke and Ser Denys Mallister keep recruits in line.
