Each Shire has a ‘Muster Captain’ who inspects and controlls the trained bands in their territory. Captains are a key part of the halfling command structure. While the goal of halfling leaders is to defend and protect, avoiding conflict where possible, it is the duty of these same leaders to bring the full force of halfling savagery to the enemy if pushed too far.

Whilst the Sand Raiders don't have professional soldiers, these Dune Veterans are the closest they'll get. Armed with two-handed axes, these experienced Halflings will carve a line through the enemy ranks nearly as fast as they can carve through a slow roasted ostrich.

Originally conceived by the dwarfs as their Steel Behemoth, the concept of an Iron Beast was later brought to the Shires by the halfling Percival Arbuckle and the design later evolved by Paddy Bobart . While the designs of individual machines vary, they are all essentially an enormous four-legged, steam — powered behemoth controlled from a small cabin on the back and armed with guns, piercing tusks and unstoppable momentum. An implacable foe, they are eminently capable of smashing through an enemy army, spreading death and shear panic.

Some units of halflings have made soldiering a full-time profession. These Stalwarts are better equipped than the Trained Bands, with metal armour (a mix of thick leather and plate mail), helmets and strong shields. Heavier battle cavalry, mounted on armoured aralez are armed with lances. They are designated as knights by outsiders simply because their weapons, equipment, and battlefield role is similar to the knights of other armies. However, as the halflings have no noble class, the name ‘knights’ is misleading in the true sense. The halflings themselves know them as Juggers.

It is said that the wail of a banshee can turn a man's heart to ice. Halflings are a practical bunch though, and - provided their offerings are plentiful enough - many can actually benefit from having a Banshee around. These ethereal horrors are often brought in for the largest feasts. If a Halfling eats Too Much (a state that many traditionalists believe is just made up nonsense), they can call on the wail of a Banshee to alleviate heartburn. All it costs is their immortal soul. But who needs that? Clear out the room for more food!

In the idyllic town of Craggy Bottom, the threat of a deceased relative coming back from the dead as a shambling corpse is pretty common. Living right next door to Deathly Pastures Cemetery State, a shambling zombie walking through town is a Tuesday. So the burial rituals have grown more elaborate as time has gone on. A popular method is mummification. Not that this stops them rising from the grave, it's just that without their internal organs and wrapped in bandages it's a lot less messy when they hobble into the tavern.
