Grandmother takes pleasure in infecting and corrupting those with the purest hearts and noblest intentions, recruiting them to her brood. But every once in a while, a truly malevolent being crosses her path, ripe for the picking. Ren was one such wretch.
Ren, already renowned for her herb lore and skill, apprenticed herself to the local healer who lived outside the village, helping the villagers with their ailments. Ren quickly grew to resent the seemingly endless stream of villagers becoming angry that she never received payment for her work, only food. Why should everyone else receive coin for their work and not her? Her hatred and jealousy toward the village grew. In time, after her mentor passed away, Ren began adding her spite and anger to her tinctures, making them bitter and unpalatable, often causing the villagers great pain and suffering, sometimes even death. Eventually, no one visited her, leaving her hungry and even angrier and more resentful. The villagers avoided her altogether as her dwelling collapsed, and she began to suffer from ailments brought on by age and hate. But all that changed after she became ensnared by Grandmother and the Awoken, deciding to visit her village one last time…
Ren’s knowledge from her former life has left her with the Heal trait, which can be helpful as the faction has plenty of models with many wounds but few other defences. She can leech from the weak, pathetic males, gaining Ki easier than other Jaakuna. While not a Melee model, her Ki Block option can find interesting uses. The Shadow Tendrils Ki Feat, well known to Savage Wave players, is quite different and adds a powerful control option.  By far Ren’s best point, however, is her cost, at just 6 Rice, she is worth it just to increase the fear values of your other Kumo!

Like the other males in the ever-present but mostly unseen Jaakuna, Katzu enjoys a life devoid of pleasure, rest or appreciation for his sacrifice. Myriad spiderlings cover Katzu’s body, which slowly drains his blood to feed. Should he be killed, they abandon him in droves to find fresher prey. For the Jaakuna, this is Katzu's greatest contribution.

Katzu's bow is surprisingly effective, but his real use comes from his Ki Feat. The ability to add more swarms, even as a melee trick, is powerful and can also help keep your Feat value high by adding an additional Kumo.

Mio is obsessed with finding beauty. Of course her twisted nature means that what she finds beautiful is often repulsive to most normal people. She can stare endlessly at a tormented kami or a tortured human. She spends long hours making complex and elaborate webs, so much so that sometimes she seems like a Betana.

Mio has decent Melee ability with three Melee Pool and poison. Of course the ubiquitous Strong trait does a lot of work for the Kumo. But with her Scuttle and Agility Ki Feats, she should be a terror when it comes to performing Scenario Actions. She can get where she needs to be and isn’t easy to remove while she’s there doing her job.

Akita left her small village to seek her fortune in Jima. Like many who do so, she found she had no unique gifts to offer and worked a regular job for the Syndicate in the gambling houses.

Expecting much more and seeing the wealth of the patrons and her employers, she constantly asked for more moons, holidays and special treatment. The other workers started calling her “Princess” to suit her lofty ambitions and lack of desire to work toward them

Hana, The Grace of Murder, is a terrifying predator who displays little of what she once was, having fully embraced the inevitable changes wrought upon her body. In her hunting grounds, she reigns supreme, killing for fun, not food, leaving countless web-wrapped corpses to rot. She favours no particular victim, killing indiscriminately to learn the strengths and weaknesses of those she stalks so that when called upon to kill for The Awoken, she is as graceful and efficient as possible.
A clear-cut melee powerhouse, Hana has a feat for everything. Predators Detachment is a new Ki Feat granting three of the best melee Traits in the game. Unnatural Sanguine Strength is there to seal the death once you have a good Success Level. Finally, Starless Midnight Chitin can grant tremendous Armour values when on the table.

Softly through the shadows, they come, The Awoken, spinning death, dread and corruption in their silken webs. Not even the empire of flesh can withstand their potent venom with just a single bite undoing all the gods have wrought. They creep ever closer, viewing the empire and Jwar through numerous eyes, choosing their prey carefully, assembling a host that thinks as one under the control of a powerful force older than time itself. Sleep not, for The Awoken are everywhere, lurking in the twilight, biding their time, ensnaring us one by one, and reshaping the world in their terrifying image!
