• They seemed to come from nowhere, without warning. The Alliance battlefleet of Italian vessels had no time to prepare, barely even enough to power up heat lances. Fighters slashed the sky as Amo Carrier Frigates broke the surface following their submerged approach, small hatches opened on their surface and small drones launched into the sky almost immediately. The Enlightened formations remained uniform as they closed the distance; pre-programmed and soulless. From another direction came the flagship. The Xenophon Battlecruiser ploughed through the waves, still glistening wet from its underwater, surprise attack. Particle beams pierced the hulls of Alliance vessels as men still ran to battlestations. The screams of steel and souls were drowned out by the screech of Enlightened Scythe fighters, strafing the set-upon ships, aiming to exacerbate the damage caused. Finally, as disarray swept across the Alliance fleet, almost as if it were a tangible encompassing cloud, then came the Lovelace cruisers. Striking deep at the heart of the enemy, more green beams of light sliced across filigree armour plates and pierced deep into gaping holes in the superstructure of larger vessels, that were as yet unsunk.

    Before long, it was over with the victims of the attack never knowing why. It might have been a territorial dispute or something altogether more esoteric in the minds of the Enlightened officers. By the time the wavelurking ships submerged, there was little left to show what had happened. Flaming patches of oil, an occasional lifeboat that went unnoticed and some potential salvage for whoever passed this way next.

  • Huge mechanical constructions lay immobile at the bottom of the sea. The darkness, only occasionally broken by the bioluminescence of strange creatures never seen by man. Uncategorised organisms began to converge, drawn in by the only source of heat for miles around. Crustacea gently crawled across the surface of the metallic things, testing to see if this was an unusual form of whale fall. With no food to be found, the gathering was small. There was no meaning here, base forms of life acted purely on instinct, akin to windup toys, simply performing the mechanical tasks of survival. The metal knew nothing, it merely was. Deep within giant carapaces a kind of survival was also happening. RJ-1027 pulsed through tubes which heated steam to create pressure in pistons that in turn prevented the ember of readiness from being extinguished in this dark place. A living thing might have been considered to be waiting had it been alive but instead, it was only being, until something else impelled its motion. Time passed.

    Without warning, the great steel worms began to move. Gentle at first as they performed diagnostics, checking for damage or inoperative parts. Then the surroundings were suffused with a green glow as they powered up fully, bafflingly complex if/then mechanisms reacting to the commands given by an Enlightened vessel, unseen on the surface. Had someone seen it they might have been fooled into thinking these colossi were alive, they were designed to appear so, after all. Engines urged them forward within hours they would be involved in a violence that would cut the meaning from scores of human lives. Others would never forget the terrifying forms of the Aronnax as they bore down upon their ships, massive jaws tearing through hulls with ease. Stories of sea beasts would chill the hearts of those who heard them but the metal things would have no opinion of any of it. They were simply tools, used as any others by the all too human Covenant of the Enlightened.

  • Commandant Matthias Alborough gazed from the huge viewports of the Chione class submarine Benefaction. The darkness of the deep ocean might have terrified weaker men, but Alborough felt no such trepidation. To him, the void ahead was an abstraction of the future, unknown and endless in scope. A thing that he would impose his will upon for the benefit of all. Below him, moving across walkways and attending consoles, were officers relaying orders and constructs performing the menial tasks that kept a submersible of this size running. It was a hive of order that the Commandant knew would one day be replicated across the globe. The Covenant of the Enlightened held a sway on humanity that was growing by the day, despite the best efforts of the so-called Great Powers. Even now, the battlefleet that he was a part of, with its Euripides Automata and Plinius Support Carriers, was on its way to annihilate a platform network controlled by the Crown. If Pax Britannia could not protect its local infrastructure, then, of course, the fickle citizens of the area would be easy enough to bring into the fold of the Custodians. Protected. Safe. Placid.

  • James Spigot reeled across the deck, feeling that what he saw wouldn’t be out of place in a penny dreadful. Strange saucer shapes soared through the sky, unleashing beams of light that carved through the Crown frigates like a hot knife through butter. James was thankful that his large battleship was protected by the combined power of their Guardian generators, the vessels on the outskirts of the fighting had no such security. The smaller of the saucers seemed to have an almost unnatural agility, able to twist and turn, finding new targets before the Crown naval vessels could react. Some launched fighters that were even now buzzing around far above his head. Ordinary Seaman Spigot saw one of the larger disc shaped flyers approach, only now appreciating its size comparative to his own craft. Without warning a bright ray of energy, tinged with green, burned into the Guardian shield above him. The fighters exploded like fireworks rippling through the Guardian field and overloading it. The noise of combat in the Ordinary Seaman’s ears was now deafening, no longer blunted by the Guardian field. The last thing James Spigot saw were dozens of metallic spheres, falling from a hatch in the bottom of the larger saucer. The last thing he did was pray.

  • “I’ve never seen anything like it. How can something so massive just hang in the air? Sure, we've got airships but at least they follow the laws of nature. Glorified balloons I can understand. What did you call it; a Thule? That was something else. I thought those huge thrusters were keeping it in the sky at first but I think it only uses them to maneuver. I couldn’t believe how quiet it was. We saw the shadow before we heard it arrive. It got loud pretty quickly though. Fighters screamed out of the section where the two discs joined. Some sort of light came out of the rim of the disks and carved across our bow. Sliced through it like we were paper. I’ll never forget the sound. That screech shook me to my core, made my bones itch. Spent the rest of the battle getting thrown around in a lifeboat so I don’t know how much more intel I can give you. Can I go back to the ward now?”

  • The Newton class are built by the Yemoja shipyard around a massive spatial displacement drive known as a Void Engine. Able to tear a passage through two otherwise unconnected locations, the Void Engines use technology developed at Wells Chasm.

    Dedicated energy transfer conduits allow these floating power stations to augment nearby vessels. Though the Zumeena class is particularly vulnerable to enemy aggression, the benefit to Enlightened scientific advancement far outweighs any loss of life amongst their crews. Not every Covenant Commodore has access to a Descartes Control Ship and so the Yemoja shipyard created the Vesalius to ensure that the welfare and effectiveness of their cetacean allies is maintained. Of course, in a faction that rarely does things by half measures, there are certain fleets that contain multiple Descartes and Vesalius to support hundreds of Physeters.

    A battlefleet represents a huge investment of resources and talent for the Covenant of the Enlightened. Deploying several Origen class Lathe Ships in support, ensures that the risks to such an investment are greatly reduced. Technically an oceanid assault automata rather than a true colossus as it lacks a human crew, the Ketos utilise Sturginium Agitators to wreak carnage against enemy capital ships. The insectile Ketos relies on surprise and cold machine logic to maximise the impact of their attacks.

    Designed by Paulette Aronnax, Lotan are amongst the most common of her oceanid assault automata. Shadowing Enlightened convoys, these segmented machines strike unexpectedly when needed, bringing their terrifying Coeus Shockmaw down to rip apart vessels like a sea monster of myth.

  • One of the largest vessels built by the Yemoja shipyards in Mombasa, the Icarus features multiple vertical magnetic catapults that can simultaneously launch squadrons of fighters. The class has fabrication and repair facilities comparable to a small naval base and makes use of these to maintain the Icarus' squadrons and lend support to other vessels in the battlefleet.

    Detailed drafts for the Daedalus class Fortified Teathership were found in the personal effects of the renegade Covenant Peer Gjenge Matee. Faithfully following her design, her Promethean Complex produced a marvel of Enlightened naval power. These versatile vessels are especially suited as the flagship of a combined flotilla of aerial and surface ships.

  • After Helsinki Markov's treachery stole the Prometheus away from its creators there has been a bitter rivalry between the Covenant of the Enlightened and the Commonwealth. Certain Peers of the Enlightened have decided to make an example of the Commonwealth for such an audacious heist and show that they have as much military influence as any of the Great Powers. As for the Okhrana, the Commonwealth Intelligence Service, they hope for more secrets of the age to be unlocked by luring the various automata and advanced enemy vessels into engagements that they can't hope to escape from. With the plan of dissecting any captured inventions for reverse engineering.

    With the help of Mongolian offshore platforms and a web of false leads, the Okhrana have orchestrated for an Enlightened battlefleet to be in place for an ambush. The Commonwealth now has engineering marvels of their own in the shape of Vitruvian Colossi. Will the Enlightened fall for the trap or have the Commonwealth bitten off more than they can chew?

  • The architects of the Dystopian Age, the Covenant of the Enlightened wield their formidable intellects to sweep aside those ignorant or deluded who stand in the way of Scientific Progress. These masters of technology covet knowledge above all things and believe that it is only they who can steer humanity on a path to enlightenment. With their wondrous war-engines, the Covenant of the Enlightened take every opportunity to demonstrate their technological supremacy. The discoveries that were intended to herald a new era for humanity are instead used to punish those who would misuse them. Only when the Covenant are lauded as the rightful leaders of the Earth, can the world be brought into a new dawn of achievement and prosperity.

    A flagship of the Enlightened fleet, Vault ships were conceived as massive floating platforms to deploy their larger engineering and scientific marvels. In this manner, the Archimedes class is usually fitted with either a Callimachus Chrono-Lathe or Diophantus Chaos-Orb, both so intricate and sophisticated in their crafting that like much that is not understood in the Dystopian Age, they are considered magical by the uneducated..

    Other fleets are centred around the graceful, and superbly equipped Nansen Explorer. Designed for long voyages far from friendly ports, with extensive laboratories, training facilities and cartographic equipment. The Nansen class is in many ways the ultimate expression of Covenant naval ambitions.

    Contents:

    • 1x Archimedes Vault Ship (can also be built as either The Shneider or Nansen Class ship)

  • The support ships that escort the Flagship vessels of the Enlightened Fleets fill some very specialist roles. The Plinius Support Carrier carries dozens of Scythe Drones and can launch them from hydraulic ramps. This allows the Plinius to partially submerge when the ramps are closed making it very difficult to see and target. Built around the same hull as the Plinius are a number of other Cruisers. The Quintilian bombardment cruiser mounts heavy rockets that it can launch at distant targets before returning below the waves. The Tacitus Assault Cruiser favours two hardpoints for turrets, most often Particle Beamers. The Claudius Merchantman is designed with extra hull space and is the backbone of Enlightened logistics, the ingenious engineers still managing to squeeze in a number of torpedo launchers to protect them from pirates and other hostiles.

    While these Cruisers are able to lurk just below the surface the Diogenese and Praxilla Class Submarines are able to operate at significant depths. These large Automata operate under a number of pre-programmed subroutines and are effective at hunting down and destroying enemy vessels.

    The Enlightened Support Squadrons kit builds eight multi-part plastic miniatures;

    • 2x Plinius Cruisers
      • Each Cruiser can alternatively be built as either Quintilian, Tacitus and Claudius Class

  • The first Hypatia Class vessel produced was the prototype named The Prometheus. This ship was stolen by the Commonwealth Agent Helsinki Markov. Despite a desperate hunt, The Prometheus was never recovered. Despite this setback, Hypatia Class Generator ships were already in production by that point and the first production ship of the class, The Hypatia, was fitted out ready for service.

    Now several years on from the Markov scandal, the Hypatia class has established itself as one of the most versatile ships available to the Enlightened. Not only does it carry significant firepower but the ultra-efficient engines and superconductors allow it to also operate three specially overcharged generators. This gives the Generator Ship and its fleet a huge amount of options.

    The support ships that escort Hypatia Class vessels and other large ships fill some often more specialist roles. • The Covenant of the Enlightened see themselves as both pioneers and the leading authority in the spheres of science and engineering. Uninterested in mere nationhood, this globe-spanning organisation considers the whole world to be their purview. Dismissing petty politics and squabbles they instead focus on the purity of developing anything they can for the greater uplifting of humanity.

    Discoveries in bionics have enabled peers in that field to influence the behaviour of a number of intelligent animals such as apes, birds, whales and dolphins. The creation of Physeter constructs from sperm whales is by far the largest of these undertakings. Usually they are employed as scouts or observers, bringing advanced warning of approaching enemies. Alternatively, once suitably equipped with a variety of weaponry they can be encouraged to make coordinated ambushes against agreed targets. During a battle, the Physeter Constructs are maintained and deployed from Control Ships such as the Descartes Class. These large, battleship-sized vessels boast advanced weaponry and are crewed by dedicated nautical engineers to further the cause of science.

    Even with the Physeter Constructs and batteries of Particle Beamers, the Descartes still need the support of smaller, faster ships. The Enlightened most commonly deploy Lovelace Class cruisers, but also outfit a number of different specifications. The Antarctica Class Superiority Cruiser, not only has a pair of Particle Beamers but also a devastating Heavy Particle Cannon. The Chatelet Class and the Ulysses Class are equipped with a small number of Scythe class fighters for reconnaissance and support, while the Stiletto Class relies on speed to get them in and out of engagements fast.

    The armed forces of the Covenant of the Enlightened are entirely composed of paid volunteers and are therefore few in number. The technological superiority of the Enlightened makes up for this with automation. Many of the smaller vessels in the Enlightened fleet are virtually crewless automatons loaded with sophisticated routines and reactions. This significantly cuts down on the crew needed for the navy as a whole. The Germain Class Zebek and Merian Class Frigate are two such vessels that are seen in squadrons alongside the larger vessels.

    The Descartes Battlefleet Set kit builds eight multi-part plastic and resin miniatures;

    • 1x Descartes Class Battleship
    • 2x Copernicus Class Cruisers (Each Cruiser can alternatively be built as either Antarctica, Chatelet, Lovelace, Stiletto or Ulysses Class)
