It is said that the elves first learned their modern ship-building techniques from the Celestians, but had explored much of the known world before the other races had dared leave the safety of their coastal waters. To the Elves in those early times, mastery of the ocean was vital not for power, but for knowledge. And yet war, it seemed, was never far away. Elf warships are equipped primarily with bristling ranks of bolt-throwers, whose enchanted ammunition can pierce the hulls of even a dwarf ironclad. Out of necessity, however, the larger vessels also carry some cannon upon their lower gundecks.

These enormous battleships seem to rise almost organically from the water, their vast, armoured hulls topped with coal-black gunports and towers, making them look almost like floating volcanoes. Their gundecks are packed with heavy guns, and their crews often comprise a contingent of Corsairs, whose firelocks pick off enemy commanders and elite troops during boarding actions with impunity. The Salamanders possess a small but elite navy, with large, powerful ships. Their crews, often commanded by mysterious arkosaurs, are well-drilled - indeed, through some form of racial memory, many salamanders are spawned with knowledge of sailing and naval strategy in their fiery blood. The strange appearance of their battleships has remained largely unchanged for millennia, and were themselves developed in response to their enemies in the East, foremost amongst them the ancient Xirkaali Empire.

Though their navy is small, the Salamanders have become the self-proclaimed guardians of the Three Kings, and take it upon themselves to police the surrounding Infant Sea. The slaving ships of the Twilight Kin and the bonefleets of the Ahmunites have felt the particular fiery wrath of the Salamanders on many occasions, while all pirates know to flee when they see the distinctive fanned sails of Salamander vessels on the horizon.

Following their membership of the League, some gunpowder artillery is also used by both the Shire army and also the brigades in Ej, as the – mostly due to exchanges in military hardware. Volley-guns deliver multi-barreled, devastating close-range fire-power, while the howitzer is a long range cannon capable of firing high explosive projectiles.

Originally conceived by the dwarfs as their Steel Behemoth, the concept of an Iron Beast was later brought to the Shires by the halfling Percival Arbuckle and the design later evolved by Paddy Bobart . While the designs of individual machines vary, they are all essentially an enormous four-legged, steam — powered behemoth controlled from a small cabin on the back and armed with guns, piercing tusks and unstoppable momentum. An implacable foe, they are eminently capable of smashing through an enemy army, spreading death and shear panic.

Stormcallers are the spiritual leaders of the Riftforged Orcs. They are not mere priests or double-speaking shamans, but living embodiments of their patron’s power, whose toil at sacred elemental forges, or unto the anvil of battle, is a homage to the power of Garkan himself.

Stormcallers act as messengers and emissaries, often delivering the orders of the High Marshalls or even one of the Wicked Ones directly from the Abyss to the field of battle. Although none amongst the Riftforged would openly question the Stormcallers’ authority, the legionaries are always uneasy around the enigmatic individuals, whose nature seems disturbingly similar to the Wicked Ones themselves.

Stormslayers are massive creatures created from the same stock as trolls, but exposure to the Nexus of Power drove them to a rage-fuelled frenzy. Each has a pair of great falchions, with which they could control the lightning that might otherwise consume them.
