Despite orders to the contrary, Captain Vanya Sokolov gave the command to push forward to attack the flank of the Diyu class vessel ahead. After months patrolling the Sea of Okhotsk finally, there was action and an enemy to fight. If he achieved the first kill, it would only be a matter of time before a promotion was due. Surely the cursed Commodore Belyaev only wanted him to hold back so that he could get the honour of first blood. Captain Sokolov couldn’t help but admire the craftsmanship of the Diyu as he closed the distance. The jade green tiles that covered the roofs, ornamental dragonheads cast onto the muzzles of guns and the rich golden lacquer made the Empire ships look like works of art, glinting in the sun. Sokolov vowed to take one as a prize and gave orders to flank the squadron of Diyu and prepare the marines for boarding. As the Kutsov under his command broke formation he could almost hear the cheers he’d receive once this battle was over. Soon, the reverie was blown away as the Empire ships began to turn on the spot, a manoeuvre impossible for the Commonwealth ships. It was then that Captain Sokolov realised that his pride had come before his fall and he slipped back into his chair with resignation. His last thought was a prayer of forgiveness before he and the scores of men under his command were engulfed in alchemical flame.

The Ergun Assault Battleship has no peer when it comes to leading landing operations. Most naval forces believe in the idea of multiple, smaller vessels. Admitting that while they may lose some, they can’t lose them all. The Emperor believes that losing troops before they’ve even made landfall is madness. To this end, the Empire built the Ergun. A resilient battleship that can take the fire of coastal defences before reaching its target. Volleys of alchemical rockets and gun battery fire pummel into enemy emplacements and shore defences as the vessel closes in. This makes the Ergun a huge target for fire which canny Commodores can make use of by setting up feints and counterattacks. This helps to mitigate the damage taken by the Assault battleship before it reaches the shoreline. Then with a clash of metal, the ramp descends and the assault begins. Once the troops have disembarked the paddlewheels easily extricate the behemoth from the land and back to sea, all the better to support the troops from afar.

The size of the Fortress was almost incomprehensible to him, larger than any of the naval vessels he had seen in his life by far. The sun played across it and cast shadows in the same way the buildings of his barracks and offices did. Kai wondered at the power that would keep a thing like this in the air. The crew alone needed to man this wonder of engineering must be in triple figures. That it carried a squadron of fighters as well as their support staff hadn’t yet crossed his mind and already he found it dizzying. At that moment Kai Chen knew he had made the right decision to join the navy and would make it the rest of his life’s work to be posted aboard a Zhanmadao. This was an example of the Empire’s glory and no-one could stand against it.

The shadows of Japanese submersibles had been spotted on an intercept course. Flying in formation they ducked to the safety of the depths to avoid fire. Perhaps this would not be such a one-sided engagement after all?

The largest vessel produced by the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, the Heilong strike battleship emphasises combined attacks with deadly rocket and Huoqiang fire to annihilate its foes. While not as large or impressive as some of the heavier Japanese vessels, the Heilong is still an impressive sight and inspires confidence in her allies and dread in her foes.

A heavy assault ramp replaces the prow of the Ergun assault battleship. Since the creation of the first primitive maps, there have been parts of the world where monsters lay and sailors fear to wonder. The Empire have been inspired by this to create their own monstrosities of the deep. The Tianlong Draconic Colossus uses a combination of rotor engines and repulsion fields to remain aloft. Originally created to patrol the airspace near the Zhanmadao Sky Fortresses and Ziwei Sky Bastions, the Tianlong swoop down, their skilled crews getting the most out of these marvels of Engineering. The Tianlong can be outfitted with different weapons located in the mouth and tail. The choice of the Heavy Huoqiang or the Heat Lancette is a difficult one for most Captains to make. The Heavy gun battery can also be removed in favour of additional crew space to house a squadron of Bushi Ryu. These highly trained Samurai use rocket-propelled armour to descend to assault enemy vessels in hand to hand combat.

Despite the fact that King Sun Li of Korea holds responsibility for all air technology the Emperors Ming and Shinuza have utilised a loophole to jointly commission the construction of a Draconic Colossus to provide air support for their own units. This has caused some amount of frustration for The Cloud Dragon and he has tried to have the Colossi decommissioned or brought under his oversight on several occasions. The Forum, however, has resisted such moves to dismantle such magnificent symbols of the Empire.

There are occasions when squadrons of Tianlong are sent on strike missions, if so they are often supported on the sea by Gong destroyers. These fast, but well-armed vessels are ideal for long-range, fast attacks, complimenting the Draconic Colossi well.

The crews of the Shanghai frigates are extensively drilled in working in large squadrons and can coordinate attacks with devastating effect. With the glut of manpower at its command, China's shipyards are capable of churning out large numbers of cruisers and frigates giving it dominance in naval affairs countered only by the elite vessels of Japan.
