• Given that airships are spotted from a greater distance than surface vessels, the crews that spy them tend to have an extended time in which to panic before their aerial opponents move in for the kill. This is doubly true for Nasr Skyships and their variant classes. Along with smaller Hirka and Alsaqr machines, these could be from the Sultanate or the Crimson League. Either allegiance will imbue dread upon their enemies for different reasons. The Sultanate sky navy has well trained marines, fighting for the glory of their Great Power. The other foe, equally as terrifying, is the Crimson League of Scheherazade. A bloodthirsty band of pirates whose Janissary assault troops seize whatever goods they can find and give no quarter. Occasionally, Skyships are equipped with underslung Sabiha attack fighters that are released to destroy ship defences and 'soften up targets' before the rest of the fleet arrive.

  • Commandant Matthias Alborough gazed from the huge viewports of the Chione class submarine Benefaction. The darkness of the deep ocean might have terrified weaker men, but Alborough felt no such trepidation. To him, the void ahead was an abstraction of the future, unknown and endless in scope. A thing that he would impose his will upon for the benefit of all. Below him, moving across walkways and attending consoles, were officers relaying orders and constructs performing the menial tasks that kept a submersible of this size running. It was a hive of order that the Commandant knew would one day be replicated across the globe. The Covenant of the Enlightened held a sway on humanity that was growing by the day, despite the best efforts of the so-called Great Powers. Even now, the battlefleet that he was a part of, with its Euripides Automata and Plinius Support Carriers, was on its way to annihilate a platform network controlled by the Crown. If Pax Britannia could not protect its local infrastructure, then, of course, the fickle citizens of the area would be easy enough to bring into the fold of the Custodians. Protected. Safe. Placid.

  • Ever since the coronation of Sultan Mustafa, Princess Scheherazade has kept herself amused using the funds she received from the government of her brother to continue her research as a member of the Covenant of Enlightened. She was instrumental in funding and developing several Covenant projects and served as a Covenant ambassador to several capitals during the early years of her brother’s reign. Exactly what role she played in the Covenant’s Schism is unclear – as is our understanding of the event.

In any case, her talents as both a leader and a strategist called her to explore other avenues for profit and adventure – and she expanded her own ‘Promethean Complex’ into a veritable armoury, developing many different advanced weapons for sale to the Great Powers or for the use of Enlightened forces. Her contact with the Covenant’s “warmaster” Schneider fostered an interest in military activities and the romance of a mercenary life. It is no surprise that the Princess established her own mercenary outfit early in her Covenant career. [Postscript: We believe the princess is operating from somewhere in Morocco, although that is pure conjecture. I would ask that we consider a detachment of Iapetus or Astraea to investigate.]

This ‘Crimson League’ is dismissed as a vanity project so far as I gather amongst the halls of power. Staffed uniformly by noble adventurers and outlandish aristocrats, the organisation has nonetheless developed a reputation amongst certain quarters as highly effective. Reports garnered from their operational activities indicate a technologically advanced force of unique aerial vehicles and experienced crews, capable of working together despite their flamboyant personalities and wreaking havoc in their wake. [Postscript: A contract with the Crimson League can run into expenses of hundreds of thousands in Sterling so I am told.]

The Crimson League has become a thorn in the side of the Sublime Porte – frequently striking at perceived threats to the Sultanate without the government’s blessing at the whim of the Exiled Princess and frequently making a diplomatic nuisance of themselves. There is a more worrying side to these concerns however, if the Sultan were to fall, would his infant son be able to rally the military to his side against the might of the House of Gold? And would the Exiled Princess simply sit out and allow her nephew to succeed to the throne that she believes is rightfully hers? And if she did intervene – would she bring the Crimson League with her? [Postscript: I believe a comparison with the Commonwealth’s Black Wolf and his proximity to the Tzar’s court would be apt here.]

  • Tales of the Honourable Eclipse Company had spread through the military forces of the Union of Federated States over the past few years. Being a largely aerial based force they had influence over land battles, naval conflicts and particularly in air based assaults. Opinions were largely varied. For some, they were a welcome reinforcement, arriving just in time to save the day. For others, a logistical complication. More traditional strategists were annoyed that the HEC operated with their own autonomy, frustratedly figuring out how to incorporate them into the larger operations while still allowing them creative execution of their orders. Then there were some that hated the apparently “honourable” mercenaries. Those men who experienced what it was like when the paycheck ran out. Soldiers whose last look at the HEC was as they withdrew from battle without warning. The contract was over and damn the eyes of whoever had the misfortune of fighting alongside them. Fortunately for the Honourable Eclipse Company, survivors in this instance were rare and few lived to spread word. Besides, the press offices of the HEC did great work making them look good.

  • The waters of this particular stretch of the Bay of Bengal were quiet for now, but they would remain so. When the Empire battlefleet that was massing in the Andaman Sea arrived they would become a roiling, violent tempest. The line drawn between the territories of the Crown and the Empire may not be literal lines through the ocean, but as soon as an unwelcome vessel crossed from one territory to the other alarms would be raised and fighters launched. Ceylon platforms supported by Nagaraja Tactical Cruisers and their escorts were running drills in anticipation of the predicted attack. The crews were tense and tired but they had no doubt that they would repel the assault from the Empire, they had done so before and would do so again.

  • It was thought that what began as a skirmish between two mercenary companies would end with both parties leaving with a bloody nose and no more said of the matter. This turned out to be far from the truth. With their future hiring power in jeopardy, neither of the forces could surrender the fight without losing face. The Crimson League and Honorable Eclipse Company were now locked in battle, both needing to secure their future contracts and, consequently, the future of their very existence.

Reinforcements came in, not just from paid battlefleets but also from the Great Powers of the Union and Sultanate, both eager to have the mercenaries they regularly employed owing them favourable rates in the future. Specialist crews with their John Henry Colossi made their way to where the fighting was thickest while Sadrazam Heavy Cruisers guarded the coastal defence platforms that had become a focus of the fighting. No mercy was given, and no quarter asked.

  • Thanks in part to the East India Trading Company, the influence of The Crown spread across much of the globe. As such, they must defend their holdings with all they have, to prevent their colonies from being blockaded or worse. This has led to a contract with the House of Scindia of the Gwalior Princely State for locally constructed and specialised craft being incorporated into the Crown’s Indian and Pacific Ocean Fleets, as well as the EITC. The Ganges Battle Cruiser and Devaki Littoral Monitor in particular, became much relied on as exemplary vessels, well suited to coastal action. A shallow draft and a pared-back design, reminiscent of an earlier age of Crown industry, might give the mistaken impression that these are not up to the task of warfare in the Dystopian Age. However, with the scattered territories constantly imperilled by local revolution and piracy, these vessels see a great deal of action. Engineering focused on the fundamentals of shipbuilding makes maintaining an operational Fleet far more practical, with the warships spending on average a third less time out of action than their British counterparts and nearly fifty percent less compared to the Canadians.

  • In the distance, what appeared to be an Imperium zeppelin floated towards the Khan Heavy Platform "Khüchirkheg Tsaiz". Tiny imperfections, like dust motes on the horizon, showed it wasn’t alone. The crew had been warned that an attack was incoming but were prepared; they knew that the Imperium fleet was stretched across the multiple platforms that held this part of the Barents Sea. These men had defended their post before and would do so again. To either side, they saw some of the other platforms, and through binoculars, they noted fists pumping the air in defiance. Only then did they recognise the silhouette was not just any zeppelin but a Maximilian Aerial Linebreaker. Cheers of resistance were silenced, and crewmen steeled themselves against the coming terror. They’d been briefed on the Maxamilian’s shield generators and bombards while some of the crew looked about the deck and wondered which of them would not make it through the day.

  • Ammo stores cracked, and crewmen screamed aboard the USS Cranston. Fires surged hungrily across the deck of the Boston Class frigate while it listed to its starboard side. Lieutenant Junior Grade Ryan knew he and the rest of his crew were doomed; it was only a matter of time before the fires reached the fuel tanks, and they would be consumed in flame. Part of his mind prayed for a swift death, but the colossal steel form in front of him hypnotised the rest. It acted less like the comparatively crude and clumsy John Henry attached to the fleet and more like a dancer he had once seen in New York. The Qualor, its name shouted in warning by several of his mates, screamed as it swept through the sky. In a moment, frozen in time, the mighty colossus scanned the sea and gazed down at the Cranston. Ryan felt as though it was looking at him… singling him out, and actually looking at him! The blazing blue eyes flashed, and the enormous hovering mechanical figure flung its arms wide, the same azure glow erupting from its mouth in a beam that split the air. Steel melted to slag, and in the blink of an eye, Ryan, his compatriots and the whole damned frigate were no more.

  • "The Couronne Grand Carrier is a masterpiece of form entwined with function. Girders and domes more at home in Parisian architecture than on machines of war are accentuated by extravagant filigree to the fore. This grandeur is backed up by engineering that befits a war machine of her stature. The hull has been reinforced with lightweight yet durable alloys devised by metallurgists at Mont Saint-Michel. Wings of Malinois Strike Fighters are safely stored in her shapely belly, waiting to be unleashed against the enemy, with expert pilots having been trained in reconnaissance and the clearance of naval mines. Some of you may have even been fortunate to see La Dame Liberte. A glorious sight, she will be sure to inspire our sailors and strike dread in the hearts of those who oppose us. Again, her use is as important as her looks with a Solex generator being hidden under the folds of her robes. I can assure you that this addition will cement President Bonaparte as the eminent force in the Latin Alliance. Merci!" -Chief Logistical Officer Reynard Dupont, in an address to financial backers of the French

  • The Shams Rahima skimmed across the coastal waters at full speed unworried about the sandbars that plagued this particular stretch. The Sobek class vessel was flanked by a pair of Kopesh Fast skimmers, ready to change formation at a moment's notice. This was supposed to be a routine patrol but the crews knew that the events of the last few months had been far from routine. Piracy was on the up, even if it had been performed mostly under the label of privateering. All the Great Powers had been attempting to violently increase their borders with even some countries under the same flag using the tempestuous time to expand at the cost of their neighbours. The peace of routine was becoming more and more like preparations for war. As a spotter called out something on the horizon, more than one crewman of the small fleet wished for less interesting times.

  • The Imperium's focus on modular naval vessels is apparent in the Falkenstein Battlecarrier. By making use of the same integrated components and mechanisms of the Elector, Blucher and Konrad classes, the Falkenstein features many of the best traits of these vessels. With forward firepower surpassing a heavy cruiser, a complement of fighters in excess of a support carrier and the coimparable resilience to a flagship, the design is aun unqualified success. The Imperium’s Admiralty in the Königlich Preußische Marine are appreciative of the toolbox nature of such a vessel. They are especially liked by Commodores with more tactical battlefleets at hand, allowing them to cover more eventualities than could be done with either a battleship or carrier alone.

  • The Great Powers vie for control of the world's trade routes, unleashing mercenary forces to disrupt shipping and sow chaos and confusion to destabilise their rivals. Two of the most notable of these privateers are The Crimson League and The Honorable Eclipse Company.

The Crimson League is led by Princess Scheherazade. Escaping the traditions of her royal family, she joined the Covenant of the Enlightened only to leave when the Egalitarian and Custodians schism came to the fore. Now, she operates following her own unknowable plan. Angry at the power of the Order within the Sultanate, she lashes out, taking contracts that appear to have nothing to do with the religious zealots, only for some to realise later that there was design all along.

The Honorable Eclipse Company have secured lucrative escort contracts with significant clients around the globe. The HEC offer security and defence solutions to those who cannot apply direct political or military action in safeguarding their investments. The HEC have had major investment from the Union of Federated States and often that Great Power has used the Company when the deployment or involvement of a Union battlefleet may be politically unwise. Though some might call the involvement of the HEC an unwelcome influence by the Union in global affairs, in truth, many commanders have found that their need for support in a theatre of engagement can only be solved by hiring the Honorable Eclipse Company.

Fortune and Glory contains two mercenary battlefleets that can be used with any Faction making this box set a must-buy for any Dystopian Wars player. Add additional airpower to your existing forces, but make sure you pay them or you could be their next contract!

  • Able Seaman Peter Harris had been on watch for the last three hours. He was sure he was becoming snowblind. Gazing out at the expanse of whiteness, he wasn’t really sure what he was looking for. “Signs of the enemy” was the order but how could he tell, trapped in this seemingly endless ice flow? No smoke rose above the frozen walls around him and any movement of the jostling blocks made it difficult to tell what was real and what was an illusion created by refracted light. Even the giveaway rumble of engines was muffled by the huge blocks of ice colliding. Harris rubbed his eyes and still saw the blank blue-white of his surroundings. As he looked out again, without warning a grey dagger-like shape broke the colour void. Within seconds he had sounded the alarm and the Albion Cruiser was alive with sailors beating to quarters. Silently, Harris hoped that the enemy had been as clueless about their proximity as he was. He would soon find out how prepared they were.

  • Commonwealth propaganda states that the Barents Sea is perfectly safe, thanks to its proximity to the sheltered docks of the White Sea from which defensive patrols regularly launch. In truth, however, it is far from tranquil. Raiders from the Scandinavian portion of the Imperium, not to mention the Scions of Jutland, frequently ambush the numerous fishing vessels and exploratory platforms. Loki Shadow Raiders make excellent use of their Ivaldi Shroud Generators to make surprise attacks and then fade away once they have crippled their target. Heimdall Recon Raiders use advanced detection systems to locate enemy patrols with the goal of avoiding contact until their battlefleet has the upper hand while Fenrir Hunter Submarines and Valkyrie Hunt Rotors allow multi-level attacks to be made. Fishermen and other civilian vessels are now being issued military escorts to prevent the damage that the Scandinavian battlefleets have been causing. Time will tell if that will be enough.

A prime example is the Abydos Hover Stronghold, numerous gun batteries can be brought to bear while repair crews wait, ready at a moments notice to perform remarkable feats of field engineering. When more direct offence is needed, the Pharos Hover Dreadnought brings a staggering array of weaponry to bear against its foes, including a deadly heavy particle cannon. • Any port was understandably scared when they saw the vessels of the enemy on the horizon, defences were manned and military forces were on alert. If the ships sighted were bearing the markings of the Scions of Jutland, it was an altogether more desperate affair. No quarter would be given, no surrender accepted and no mercy shown. While operating under a letter of marque from the Kriegsministerium, the Scions of Jutland have their own hierarchy, following the augueries of Volva Gullveig, the Witch of Jutland. A patron of one of the Great Powers might try to employ the services of the Scions as privateeers, but Gullveig has her own eldritch motives guiding her decisions and, ultimately, the contracts undertaken by the group. Few know why she does what she does but none can question her effectiveness.

Often a battlefleet will be led by a Valhalla Fast Dreadnought, its paired Sturmbringers and fore mounted heavy volt gun batteries providing a devastating punch before eager marines perform a decisive boarding action. Rarer but no less impressive are the Asgard carriers, surrounded by swarms of Valkyrie Hunt Rotors, unleashing their fury from above like their mythic namesakes. • Only moments ago the Alliance patrol was chugging peacefully along. Now there was only chaos and violence. The patrol was making routine rounds 205 Nautical miles from the Bay of Oiapoque that marked the border with SUSA and the Union of Federated States. Merely two days ag this stretch of sea was devoid of any points of interest. Now there was a Farpoint Sentry Platform. The Union had managed to put this into pace with remarkable speed. While technically far enough out to see to not be a breach of any treaties, the Alliance Commodore, Saulo Rezende saw this as an insult. Without any visible backup, he decided to make a name for himself by taking the platform. Had his crew spotted the shapes getting bigger on the horizon, COMO Rezende may have decided against it. Cheyanne Hunter Submarines rose to the surface and unleashed torpedoes against the now outnumbered patrol. Akron Sentry Rotors flew from the skies, hidden in the glare of the midday sun. More terrifying than all of them, a pair of John Henry Vitruvian Colossi had raced in from distance and crushed frigates and cruisers alike with great hammers that annihilated whole sections of a vessel at a time sending men to their watery grave before they could realise what was happening. The last thing that Commodore Saulo Rezende thought of was the skill of the trap that ended him. That, and the crews he had led to their doom.
