It was once Elita Nura's dream to join the ranks of the Cor Caroli; to become a vessel for a fragment of the Allshard and to serve the Order more fully as such. Despite her desire, Nura was given command of the Spica Astraea - the Portal Vanguard. This elite team are sent in to conduct lightning raids on enclaves of Tainted men and women as well as covert missions. There are few places safe against a well-trained team armed with portal technology.

Nura believes that this assignment was as much because of her opposition to High Sircan Abner as her portal mastery and ability to command. The position dictated that she be promoted to the rank of Sircan and therefore able to urge Abner and his followers to more direct action against the Tainted. The High Sircan is a constant source of frustration for Nura and those within the Order who demand they take the fight to the Hex and uncover all those who have been turned by its corruption. She would be the spark that lights the fuse, the catalyst that starts the great crusade against their ancient foe.

Elita Nura continues to be held in check by Abner and while she is an advocate for change and a more aggressive approach, she lacks enough support to put enough pressure on him to make a change. It goes without saying that Nura fights with passion against any foe but especially those who have been tainted by the Hex. Her use of portals is second to none and she uses this to devastating effect on the battlefield by appearing from nowhere and laying waste with her Sircan Stave.

The other members of the Spica Astraea have been hand picked by Nura. Her trusted lieutenant is Aeron Bran, who has ascended through the ranks of the Spica in just a few years becoming a trusted field operative and has served Nura on countless missions. He is the and solid dependable centre of the team, always ready with a creative solution to any problem. In battle, he is ready to be deployed through a portal to engage the enemy with his Vibro Gauntlet and his family's Relic Pistol.

Janna Salto is a fellow devotee of portal technology and has been working alongside Nura for many years. She is not as outspoken as her leader and holds her own counsel during discussions regarding politics, but the pair work very well together and coordinate their portal network with ease. Janna has a highly disciplined mind and is stoic in the face of danger, allowing her to best deploy her Portal Glove as both a tool and a weapon. Salto also has contacts in the Union Secret Service and Infernal Affairs making her a vital component in the Orders intelligence gathering network.

Venatici Helios is utterly devoted to Nura. The sole survivor of a disastrous mission to Greece, Helios shows little sign of mental anguish or trauma and has instead proven both charismatic and effective at leading small groups of Spica on raids. Helios has contacts in a large number of frontier settlements and is able to rouse locals to take up arms to assist their team in achieving their goals, typically unbeknown to them.

To compensate for the relative fragility of the Astrea, Procyon Makara has attached several of her Cor Caroli to the division. Noth and Khaatan are excellent examples of their kind, both are a dominating presence on any battlefield they deploy to. Wielders of the deadly Stola Chain, these are incredibly difficult for a mortal to use let alone master to the level that these two have. Only with their experience of many lifetimes have they managed to perfect their art. The chains are launched with weighted blades at the end that wrap or pierce the enemy, who is then dragged in close for the killing blow. When used after emerging unexpectedly from a portal, the effect only adds to the terror sown by such demigods.

Felipe Espinosa, or Bloody Espinosa as he is often referred to on wanted posters throughout the states of Durango, Sonora and West Texas, is a rogue, desperado, thief, mariachi and, to many, a bold freedom fighter. He cares little for the laws of the Union, which he feels do not apply to him and even less for the lives of those who stand in his way. Filipe is a brute of a man, a slab of muscle and hate, twice the width of a normal man. Felipe's infamy is well deserved and widespread.

Felipe can usually rely on his equally nefarious family to back him in a fight. His eldest brother, Vivian, was once the leader of the gang until he was shot in the back by the bounty hunter Thomas Tate Tobin. Instead of dying over the next few days Vivian lingered on, his body twisted and mutated into a screaming malformed beast. In the chaos that followed Vivian's wife, Sofia Antoniela, stepped forward and calmed her husband. She could see the recognition in his still familiar eyes and the mindless rage within him abated. He now lives a half-life where he is driven by instinct more than rational thought but, as long as he is close to his beloved wife, he can retain enough of his humanity to restrain himself from savagely attacking anyone in sight.

With bounty hunters still on their trail, Felipe took the reins as gang leader but the revulsion and bitterness at his brothers change simmers just below the surface. He admired Vivian and as a younger man wanted nothing more than his elder brother's approval. Felipe will kill any lawman out of hand, often going out of his way to hunt them down like a dog.

Pedro Espinosa is the youngest of the siblings and tried to escape his familial ties, his skill with a guitar making him a popular musician throughout the state of North Mexico. All that changed however when he was caught in a brawl and killed the man who mangled his right hand. Fleeing to the safety of his family, Pedro was indebted when Vivian arranged for a replacement hand to be made for him by the brilliant Wendell Lee. Regrettably, his skill with a guitar will never be the same again and filled with spite, Pedro now removes the right hand of any man he kills and keeps them as a souvenir.

The remaining Espinosas, Jose and Luccia, have a fractious relationship. Unsettlingly close at times, they occasionally fly into fierce rivalries fuelled by petty jealousies or by something deeper. This feuding is often the premature end to the gang's Mariachi performances, although these days their reputation is such that few towns fail to recognise them on sight. This is of little consequence as many towns will feign ignorance and welcome them to perform, rather than see the Espinosas talents for bloody retribution be displayed instead.

The inventor Thomas Edeson has a knack of developing technology pioneered by others and refining it as his own. Coupled with a shrewd understanding of the politics within the Enlightened, his place at the heart of Burson Carpathian’s Egalitarian theology is assured.

Edeson has taken advances in communications and applied his own considerable intellect to expand the field of sonic based technology. His most significant achievement to date has been the development of the Phonic Blaster; a highly versatile weapon capable of rupturing eardrums, skin and also internal organs if the frequency is right. The experimental Aural Projectors he personally wields are even more powerful.

A laboratory accident in his youth left him deaf to the world. Not one to let human frailty defeat him, Edeson developed a new hearing device to overcome his disability. While fine-tuning the device during a trip to the ballet, Edeson became entranced by Mina Miller, the ballerina of the company. He fell in love with her and the pair were soon married. Dancing was Mina’s passion and as he worked he would often ask her to dance in his workshop in a private performance as his muse. When Mina was struck down by Polio, the science of the Enlightened saved her life, but she was forever mentally and physically debilitated by the disease. Desperate to see his wife smile, Thomas arranged for Gustave Eiffel to create her a new pair of legs and improve her body. The operation was a success and Mina is now more devoted than ever, tirelessly dancing for Edeson as he works long into the night. If Edeson has to travel, Mina usually accompanies him, now his lethal protector as much as a muse…

The moon-howl brothers of the mountains have long been allies to the Warrior Nation. In times of need, whole packs have been known to come to the aid of a beleaguered tribe. An honourable and gentle soul when at rest, Ghost Wolf is insightful and wise, fond of storytelling and enjoying the company of his extensive family. All too often he is roused to war and his talents are put to a more bloody purpose.

Though a powerful Spirit Walker, Ghost Wolf often remains in his mortal form as the Warrior Nation has a great need for his leadership and tactical mind.The wolf within him calls to his kin and often he is always accompanied by a number of his brother wolves. These hunting wolves have been blessed by the Great Spirit to be larger and stronger than their kin as well as possessing more intelligence. They are as fast as the wind and their powerful jaws are potent allies. When they attack in a pack there is little that can stand against them. The wolf spirit ensures he is often accompanied by those Spirit Walkers of the Weylyn who can embrace the animal spirit and aid their chieftain.

Ghost Wolf can always rely on the support of Hawkeye and Moonswift, two experienced warriors who are carving out their own legend within the Nation. Irontooth is the youngest of the Warrior Nation's leaders and a man who has grown up within the new society forged by Raven Spirit rather than the old divided tribes that preceded it. From an early age, Irontooth showed great skill and power in the ways of the Great Spirit and he soon took his own path to become a Spirit Priest. This was short lived as only weeks into his training his people were butchered by an interloping Union patrol. Instinct took over and he embraced his Spirit Guide: the Mountain Lion. Irontooth ‘awoke’ to find he was a Spirit Walker and like the lion in his vision, he was soon stalking his enemies, his teeth sinking into flesh and talons ripping his foes open as they fled screaming into the night. While the transformation from man into Spirit Walker is usually achieved only through a long and intense ritual, this change had occurred spontaneously. This gift has even raised an eyebrow from Raven Spirit when he heard tell of it.

Irontooth's path has been chosen for him and a life of dedication to the Great Spirit was now to take a very different route. He is a Spirit Walker, a warrior of formidable strength and skill and Irontooth is often found leading warrior bands through the mountain paths to strike at their enemies.

To his wife, Silver Spear, Irontooth confesses he would rather that this path had not been chosen for him and that he could live out his days with her in peace. He knows the Great Spirit hears him and he also knows that the Great Spirit can see his heart and can see that despite these private thoughts Irontooth will continue to fight the enemies of the Warrior Nation even with his last breath should it come to that.

Even among the elite ranks of the Cor Caroli some individuals rise to the top. The Luminent Kopesh is less of a weapon and more an instrument of slaughter in the hands of Altcap Zain. Once he has closed with the enemy, few can stand against his prowess in close combat as strike after strike lands against his enemies defences.

Created as guard dogs and sentries during the early days of Payson's growth from small town to impregnable fortress city, the K9 automata are unusual in that they were and still are entirely mechanical. As the Enlightened moved towards using more esoteric materials in their inventions the K9 has remained as one of their few creations that have not been in some part made partly of living tissue. This is a testament to its reliability.

Though the secrets of their manufacture were eventually given over to the Union by the defector Nikolai Tesla the Enlightened were unwilling to allow a rival to have access to superior technology so created a new K9 model, the H311, colloquially known as ‘the gun dog’. Built to serve as guardians to the heavily fortified Promethean Complexes this up armoured and more heavily armed version of the K9 sacrifices speed for armour and boasts a Gatling gun as well as the standard issue steel jaws. A pack of these beasts is more than a match for even a hardened unit of men with the weight of fire they can lay down. The gun dog also benefits for more advanced cranial engines enhanced with predictive modules that are programmed to mimic aggressive animal behaviour patterns whilst allowing for intuitive target requisition.

Despite Union embargoes the Enlightened sell copious quantities of K9 units on the black market so that it is not only the Union army or sanctioned Lawmen that are accompanied by a pack of these metal mutts. Outlaws, Hex Cultists, even farmers or barkeeps can buy a new best friend if they can afford it. Failing that they can steal them as only the most expensive models have voice recognition keyed to one owner meaning a hard reset in a workshop is usually enough for a change of ownership.

The G.I. Bot is a military grade version of the UR-31 and shares many features with the Heavy Lawbots of the same mark. Developed by the Union as an iterative improvement on the Enlightened designed UR-30's, the G.I. Bot is built for open combat deployment. Its updated design has led to the inclusion of better armour and a more advanced combat logic engine with many complicated parts and, subsequently, a lower battery life. These changes have necessitated shorter tours of duty yet still ensures that a fully automatic army will elude the Union for years to come. Despite this, the UR-31 G.I. Bot serves in a support capacity with most Armoured Guard regiments. It is a common enough piece of hardware that two dedicated assault platoons have been readied for overseas deployment staffed entirely by these tireless and relentless metal soldiers.

Of all the outlaws operating on the Union Frontier, the story of Juan Ponce de Leon and his Conquistadores is by far the most incredible. Ponce de Leon is a nobleman with a delusional mind. Having emerged from the Florida coast with claims that he is the very same man who set out in search of the Fountain of Youth nearly three hundred years ago, he believes that he and his Conquistadores have been granted eternal life and, with them, he now explores this new world like a travelling lord. One could be forgiven for taking Countess Augusta Byron's perpetual air of melancholy as a symptom of her upbringing. After all, when one is raised around some of the most emotive and creative minds of their time, it is surely impossible not to absorb some of that need to create. All artists crave the perfect result, whether it be a musical composition that can reduce men to tears, or a painting so beautiful that not a single soul can step past without pausing to enjoy its beauty. The Augusta's canvas is infinitely more complex. Her magnum opus is herself. If she shows an interest in a particular individual's face or admires the length of their legs, that person is likely to witness firsthand her inconceivable feats of fleshcrafting. The Countess has improved upon her own person over the years until nobody – herself included – can even recall how she once looked. Presently, Augusta towers above the average woman, at seven feet in height, and although it could be argued that her entire body is nothing more than a patchwork, a mish-mash of disparate parts, it cannot be denied that the whole is striking and certainly memorable.

The New York Tribune recently published an article cautioning the use of advanced technology as it may “corrupt the moral fibre of our society.” Should the experiments conducted by Countess Augusta Byron be made common knowledge there would surely be an outcry amongst those of a sensitive and civilised disposition. Even amongst her fellow Enlightened Peers, the Countess is looked upon with a peculiar blend of awe and fear. A pioneer in galvanism, the Countess often applies that peculiar science into forming reanimated Creations - a blend of flesh, steel and lightning that creates a creature many times greater than the sum of its parts. The Countess has been know to cosset her ‘children’, always seeking new and better methods for improving them and granting them longevity. With such a fearless army at her command and with the capacity to make as many as needed, she is a force to be reckoned with.

The corruption of Walks Looking was the doorway to the tainting of the Warrior Nation. Ghost Wolf's daughter became tainted by The Hex and transformed into Wicasasni to become a twisted creature of malice and vengeance. Wicasasni took great delight in warping and corrupting the minds and bodies of her own people, creating a “Dark Nation”. Though Wicasasni was eventually captured by Ghost Wolf and the tainted aspect driven out, the wraith-like creature that emerged was just as deadly and even more malevolent than before. Walks Looking returned to her people with half a soul, the other half now sustaining her darker aspect that had been given independence in the exorcism. While Wicasasni can no longer warp the flesh of her followers she is still surrounded by twisted men and women who are the product of her previous corrupting influence. Khali, Camazotz, Seke and Nizhoni now work with Wicasasni and together the Dark Nation will tear down the world of humanity and remake it in their own image.
