• The bloody Civil War that raged throughout the Union in the early part of the 1860s, typically referred to as the Ore War, was so devastating that entire towns were simply wiped off the face of the earth. This was largely the result of the war being fuelled by Covenant of the Enlightened scientists lead by Burson Carpathian. Under the guise of an egalitarian doctrine, Carpathian felt it was his responsibility to supply both sides of the conflict with more and more devastating weaponry, in exchange for power and influence. Beyond Carpathian and his egalitarians in the Americas, the majority of the Covenant of the Enlightened maintained a policy of custodianship, preferring to keep hold of the technologies they developed for themselves. They did not interfere in global conflicts. However, in the face of this unimaginable bloodshed, one young and brilliantly gifted Enlightened scientist named Nikolai Tesla was so horrified by what he saw as a war without end that he took an act that changed the world. Ignoring the other Enlightened and his own government in the Prussian Imperium, Tesla made his way to New York and there he offered his expertise to the Union in order to bring an end to the war with the Confederacy. President Lincoln, desperate for anything to break the stalemate of destruction, recognised that this could well be the turning point of the conflict and accepted the young scientist's offer.

    As was his demand, Tesla was given control and near total autonomy over a massive manufacturing centre in Washington known as the Pipeworks. From there, Tesla immediately began to produce weaponry that he hoped the Confederates would have little means of countering. While the fighting naturally intensified, it was not long before the tide turned in the Union's favour and the devastating electric weaponry devised by Tesla had the Southern States on the backfoot. A final push from General Grant saw an end to the Ore War and an iron grip of peace was enforced across the fractured Union.

    To maintain this new and expanding power on the world stage, Nikolai continues to labour in the Pipeworks, creating labour automata for urban renewal projects, arc reactors to bring power to the nation and a well-armed military to safeguard the lives of all the citizens of the Union. Tesla's most advanced combat automata, electric weapons and specialised armour are all employed on the front lines of this fight and Tesla can often be found field testing such marvels, often in his own specially designed battle strider.

  • The race that eventually became the Magenta was an apex predator on their homeworld. The Magenta naturally evolved the means to stalk, chase and run down prey much larger than themselves and a strong pack mentality increased their effectiveness ten-fold. Once the Magenta reached space flight they were welcomed into the Watcher Hegemony, their natural weapons, speed, strength and agility making them ideal at spearheading assaults.

    The Magenta Alpha is a prime example of the species and is further augmented to increase their physical prowess beyond natural limits. When a mission calls for overwhelming physical force, the Magenta will be employed to overrun enemy positions before they even know they are under attack. She will then disengage and disappear before striking from a different direction or going to ground until the time is right.

    The Magenta Alpha is heavily invested in the Watcher's mission to seek out the Hex and Order influence on humanity and eradicate any trace of it.   • Creation VII was the result of a visit by Countess Augusta Byron to the Antarctican coast. An evening of parlour games at Leonidas Spire involving Absinthe and Phrenology turned into a wager with her host, Fairuza Moreaux, to create something that would prove twice the ability of any one of Moreaux's creations. Taking her host's challenge literally, Creation VII was the result of an ingenious fusion of two of the most brutish and towering specimens Moreaux had available. None could dispute that the result was impressive, even compared to other such marvels of galvanic application. After being lauded by the Enlightened of Leonidas Spire, the Countess made the request that her new creation would accompany her home and enter into her service there. Despite Lord Sturgeon's insistence that no new technology created on the continent could be removed from it without his permission, Moreaux readily agreed. After all, the vivisectionist was confident she could replicate what she had seen of the Countess' work.

    Creation VII has a number of innovations over previous monstrosities. Reinforced spinal braces have given Creation VII a supremely erect posture that allows for four weapon arms to be brought to bear against targets, something that is impossible with similarly massive creatures with their stooped gaits, such as Creation V.

    Thanks to the combined mental power of a series of slaved logic engines directly interfaced with the necrotised cerebral tissue of the two original donors, Creation VII is capable of independent, if not erratic, action.

    This not only allows Creation VII to use all of its extra limbs simultaneously, but it also has the ability to carry out more complex orders than its contemporaries and to act apart from its designated controller. There is a drawback to this design, the two anonymous head donors do not always agree on the same course of action, causing Creation VII to sometimes grind to a halt in the middle of its assigned task. This inactive stance can be extremely inconvenient if it happens in the heat of battle. Unless the heads can resolve their conflict quickly or their handler directly intervenes, Creation VII can remain frozen mid-action for extended periods whilst battle rages around it.

    Boosted muscle mass and additional pneumatic bracing means that the weapons Creation VII carries into battle are suitably large and brutal. For attacking at long range it is equipped with a Razorspine Rotor, a heavy rotary cannon that fires specially designed shells that splinter apart after leaving the barrel, creating an expanding line of razor-thin spines propelled forward at speed. For medium range, Creation VII is fitted with an incendiary spray cannon that fires a sticky liquid that erupts into flame when it makes contact with air. The mixture adheres to whatever it lands upon and even burns underwater.

    It is up close, however, that Creation VII is most dangerous. Its upper right arm ends in an Industrial drill while its left is fitted with an industrial grade double buzzsaw. So versatile is this combination of weapons and tools that Countess has often had cause and compensation to lend this tireless behemoth to her fellow Lords and Ladies. Indeed many of the deeper tunnels beneath the Warcradle are thanks to Creation VII.

  • All species within the Watcher Hegemony have their role to play. The Watchers are all too aware of the pitfalls of over specialising. They have not endured for centuries by being inflexible in this manner and so have an entire species, the Grey, who specialise in... not specialising!

    The Grey are bred as foot soldiers, labourers, architects, engineers, spies, diplomats and scientists - whatever the Watchers need them to be. When circumstance gives the Watchers a need to rely on the Grey for military operations, they are birthed from gestation vats aboard their Arkvault or base of operations with Vermillion or Onyx traits spliced into their genome. This additional genetic material allows them to utilise a wide variety of sophisticated and deadly weapons.

    The Grey Elites are birthed with greater intelligence and tactical ability, a process that takes longer and more resources meaning they are fewer in number. Equipped with weapon mounts, they can either utilise heavier weaponry than the more common Grey Myriad or employ jetpacks for short jumps over terrain, making the Grey Elites extremely versatile on the battlefield.

  • It was once Elita Nura's dream to join the ranks of the Cor Caroli; to become a vessel for a fragment of the Allshard and to serve the Order more fully as such. Despite her desire, Nura was given command of the Spica Astraea - the Portal Vanguard. This elite team are sent in to conduct lightning raids on enclaves of Tainted men and women as well as covert missions. There are few places safe against a well-trained team armed with portal technology.

    Nura believes that this assignment was as much because of her opposition to High Sircan Abner as her portal mastery and ability to command. The position dictated that she be promoted to the rank of Sircan and therefore able to urge Abner and his followers to more direct action against the Tainted. The High Sircan is a constant source of frustration for Nura and those within the Order who demand they take the fight to the Hex and uncover all those who have been turned by its corruption. She would be the spark that lights the fuse, the catalyst that starts the great crusade against their ancient foe.

    Elita Nura continues to be held in check by Abner and while she is an advocate for change and a more aggressive approach, she lacks enough support to put enough pressure on him to make a change. It goes without saying that Nura fights with passion against any foe but especially those who have been tainted by the Hex. Her use of portals is second to none and she uses this to devastating effect on the battlefield by appearing from nowhere and laying waste with her Sircan Stave.

    The other members of the Spica Astraea have been hand picked by Nura. Her trusted lieutenant is Aeron Bran, who has ascended through the ranks of the Spica in just a few years becoming a trusted field operative and has served Nura on countless missions. He is the and solid dependable centre of the team, always ready with a creative solution to any problem. In battle, he is ready to be deployed through a portal to engage the enemy with his Vibro Gauntlet and his family's Relic Pistol.

    Janna Salto is a fellow devotee of portal technology and has been working alongside Nura for many years. She is not as outspoken as her leader and holds her own counsel during discussions regarding politics, but the pair work very well together and coordinate their portal network with ease. Janna has a highly disciplined mind and is stoic in the face of danger, allowing her to best deploy her Portal Glove as both a tool and a weapon. Salto also has contacts in the Union Secret Service and Infernal Affairs making her a vital component in the Orders intelligence gathering network.

    Venatici Helios is utterly devoted to Nura. The sole survivor of a disastrous mission to Greece, Helios shows little sign of mental anguish or trauma and has instead proven both charismatic and effective at leading small groups of Spica on raids. Helios has contacts in a large number of frontier settlements and is able to rouse locals to take up arms to assist their team in achieving their goals, typically unbeknown to them.

    To compensate for the relative fragility of the Astrea, Procyon Makara has attached several of her Cor Caroli to the division. Noth and Khaatan are excellent examples of their kind, both are a dominating presence on any battlefield they deploy to. Wielders of the deadly Stola Chain, these are incredibly difficult for a mortal to use let alone master to the level that these two have. Only with their experience of many lifetimes have they managed to perfect their art. The chains are launched with weighted blades at the end that wrap or pierce the enemy, who is then dragged in close for the killing blow. When used after emerging unexpectedly from a portal, the effect only adds to the terror sown by such demigods.

  • One of the most influential figures in the Covenant of the Enlightened, Burson Carpathian was a man on who the very Dystopian Age would hinge upon. Carpathian cared not for such things. His obsession over the past decade was in researching and challenging the very laws of nature so that he might be able to restore to life his beloved wife Veronica. Such a destiny was denied him one fateful night at the hands of his own nephew, Roman Ursul.

    Ursul (now going by the name Caym) assassinated his uncle while Carpathian was speaking to an assembled audience of Enlightened Peers. Expecting to be lauded as the new head of the Enlightened, Caym had badly misread the situation and was forced to flee before retribution could be met out against him. The damage was done, however, and it was clear that Carpathian was mortally wounded. Kyle the Black, and Countess Augusta Byron, worked tirelessly on the dying scientist for three days. Miraculously, the pair managed to bring him back from the brink of death, though he was forever transformed. Most of Burson's body was damaged beyond repair and his brain was also heavily damaged.

    Utilising the latest scientific and engineering breakthroughs, Carpathian is sustained in a reshaped body and mind. In his new incarnation, Carpathian's physical form is formidable. His new hands can crush bone with little effort and his Atomic Minigun is capable of laying down a hail of irradiated bullets. The most formidable aspect about Carpathian remains his mind, however, where he was once calculating and detached, he is now fickle and irrational. He will often erupt in spontaneous rages or moments of inconsolable misery. His closest allies are now fearful of his reactions to the smallest disappointments and his enemies are now fearful of this new more powerful and more unpredictable foe.

    As for Caym, while he has not been seen in the Frontier since that fateful day, there is no doubt a reckoning still to be had.
